Press freedom declined in Armenia
According to a Freedom House’s annual report, Freedom of the Press 2014 released on May 1, 2014 global press freedom has fallen to its lowest level in over a decade. Armenia’s rank remained unchanged as compared to the previous year. It ranked 134th out of 197 countries of the world, with a score 62, and is categorized as not free. However its score declined by 1 point, compared to last year’s. Each country is ranked on a scale of 0 to 100, with 0 being the best and 100 being the worst. Countries having a combined score, of 61–100 are considered as not free, 31–60 as partly free and 0–30 as free, including points for legal, political and economic environments.
The decline of press freedom was driven in part by major regression in several Middle Eastern states, including Egypt, Libya, and Jordan; marked setbacks in Turkey, Ukraine, and a number of countries in East Africa; and deterioration in the relatively open media environment of the United States. Freedom of the Press 2014 found that despite positive developments in a number of countries, most notably in sub-Saharan Africa, the dominant trends were reflected in setbacks in every other region.
