Yerkri Shabate addresses OGP
Yerkir Media television’s “Yerkri Shabate”(Yerkir’s Week) show addressed “Open Government Partnership” (OGP) Initiative. On September 2011 The Republic of Armenia joined Open Government Partnership (OGP) initiative. Transparency International Anticorruption Center (TIAC), in addition to other proposals, offered a proposal on ensuring transparency in the mining sector of Armenia which was included in OGP 2014-2016 Second Action Plan with an aim to make mining sector more transparent, by seeking to get information on the real owners of mines, their financial state, how much taxes they pay, etc. It will give an opportunity to oversee the whole mining sector. However, Varuzhan Hoktanyan, Executive Director of TIAC was concerned that the proposal might stay on paper, since the commitment was presented ambiguously.
The OGP is a voluntary, multi-stakeholder international initiative that aims to secure concrete commitments from governments to their citizenry to promote transparency, empower citizens, fight corruption, and harness new technologies to strengthen governance.
Varuzhan Hoktanyan thinks that the main problem OGP faced was the lack of pro-activity and approaches to it in order to ensure transparency, accountability and participation. To some extent these all become formal.
