Disappearing Yerevan: Amiryan Street
In the 1870s, the house of Grigor Amiryan was built on Abovyan Street. It is not just a building — it is a fragment of Yerevan’s historical memory, carrying the past within it and reminding us that cities also live through their monuments.
Today, this building is under threat. Despite its official status as a cultural monument, it risks becoming yet another lost piece of heritage.
In 2008, the government decided to alienate this historic building in the name of “overriding public interest.” However, the law clearly states that if no action is taken within 7 years, that interest can no longer be considered overriding.
In this case:
the building can no longer be alienated,
the developer has lost their legal claim,
yet the monument is still at risk.
It is time for the law to serve culture and society — not to destroy them.
The repository of Yerevan's historical and cultural monuments is available here.
