In the Freedom House 2007 report released on June 26, Armenia remains a partly free country in terms of its respect for political rights and civil liberties. "Bribery and nepotism are reported to be common among government bureaucrats, and government officials are rarely prosecuted or otherwise removed for abuse of office," says the report.

The judicial branch is subject to political pressure from the executive branch and suffers from considerable corruption. The Court system is corrupt and business competition is largely unfair. Key industries remain in the hands of oligarchs and influential clans who once received preferential treatment in the early stages of privatization.
