Stakeholders' discussion to make amendments and additions to the Electoral Code
On the threshold of presidential elections there is a need to amend the Electoral Code so that public at large strengthen confidence in the electoral processes. It was stated by Sona Ayvazyan, Deputy Director of Transparency International Anti-corruption Center (TIAC) during a stakeholders' discussion on "Civil society's call for urgent measures to ensure free and fair elections in Armenia" which took place at Ani Plaza Hotel on November 26, 2012. In order to make amendments and additions to the Electoral Code a number of proposals were presented by interested non-governmental organizations, including TIAC, Europe in Law Association, Helsinki Citizens' Assembly Vanadzor Office, "Protection of Rights Without Borders" and "Rule of Law" NGO.
As many electoral violations are supported by the Electoral Code itself it is critical for the NGOs that came up with a proposal package to introduce certain amendments before the conduct of presidential elections of 2013.
The discussion which lasted for three hours brought together representatives of the National Assembly Committees, factions, Central Electoral Commission, judiciary, Human Rights Defender's Office, as well as international and non-governmental organizations and mass media.
