NGOs voiced their concerns over government decision

Sona Ayvazyan, Board Member of Transparency International Anti-corruption Center was among the speakers representing civil society at a press conference, convened at "Hayeli" Club on September 10, 2010. Participants in the press conference discussed the implications of the new unit, Oversight Inspectorate, set up inside the Ministry of Justice staff to oversee the legality of certain non-commercial organizations' activity.

The charter and structure of the inspectorate were approved by Government decision of August 5, 2010. Only after it was adopted have non-governmental organizations this time as well become aware of the decision.

Other speakers participating in the press conference were Abgar Yeghoyan, President of "Protection of Consumers' Rights" NGO, Boris Navasardyan, President of Yerevan Press Club and Tamara Abrahamyan, President of "Araza" Non-Governmental Benevolent Organization. In the opinion of the NGO representatives, the document posed a serious threat - with the scope of oversight not limited, the inspectorate's activity may allow great deal of arbitrariness.
