1in.am: the fight against corruption requires high ranking arrests
In a conversation with 1in.am Transparency International anti-corruption center (TIAC) deputy director Sona Ayvazyan mentioned that the government of the Republic of Armenia needs to be more active in showing that their actions are aimed at overcoming corruption. This is due to the promises made by international organizations that, if the government takes real steps to combat corruption international support can continue, while drawing parallels between outbursts of fighting corruption in the election period.
TIAC suggested a number of key steps within the framework of fighting against corruption such as the prevention of conflict of interest issues, in cases of conflict of interest the prohibition of said actors from taking action or making decisions, the separation of politics from the economy, proper declaration and release of information in declarations, regulations concerning the use of public resources, which will make management more efficient and prevent abuses, the arrests of high-ranking officials, property compensation for misuse of public resources and so on. Public officials who own businesses should not be allowed to make decisions accordingly. Public officials should not own businesses in general, and those companies should not engage in public procurement and public auctions.
According to Sona Ayvazyan the fight against corruption should occur under public oversight and in conditions of public trust. In that regard, public oversight is important in the election process. Whereas, under the new electoral code the public is excluded from oversight procedures. After all, it is because of fraudulent and unfree elections that such officials come to office, who in the long run are not accountable to the people and engage in corruption.
