Broadcasted via Radio Liberty, "A Crossroads of Viewpoints" program on August 9 2008 brought together TIAC Chairwoman Amalia Kostanyan and MP Hermine Naghdalyan. The program, hosted by Anna Israyelyan, reflected on the Armenian authorities' fight against corruption within the latest months, manifested by arrests of middle- and lower-ranking functionaries and law enforcement officials. Hence, an attempt was made to sort out if it implied a start of a true fight against corruption or was merely a skilful PR action.

The guests of the program expressed their viewpoints whether or not the arrests and opening of criminal cases against middle- and lower-ranking functionaries of police, prosecutor's office, cadastre, universities and so on were justified.

In the opinion of Amalia Kostanyan, the international experience shows that punishment for, prevention and education on corruption are closely interrelated. In order to enjoy public support the authorities should record corruption related to high-ranking officials as well. The Government will not be effective and successful in carrying out reforms unless grand corruption remains unpunished. Fight against corruption should be systemic and not planned or rhetoric. Should no justice be exercised, it would be a challenge to require the citizens to protect their interests.
