The challenges Armenias civil society has to face
In her talk to 1in.am Armenian News and Analyses online, Sona Ayvazyan, Deputy Director of Transparency International Anticorruption Center expressed her view on civil society, which would attempt to voice its protest against the decision of Armenias membership of the Customs Union through various ways - statements, negotiations and actions. She meanwhile noted that she was not assertive how effective those means would be. "Our authorities once again proved that they are not democratic and do not give due consideration to the public opinion. They are ready for pressure compelling upon them to bear. However, it will not silence the public. The people who are against membership of the Customs Union will voice their concerns.
According to Sona Ayvazyan this is an issue of value systems and it is important who you go your way with, since you are to adopt and share the same values. In the given case president Sargsyan made the decision in favor of authoritarian Russia by sacrificing Europe having democratic values, thus making a rather challenging choice. The citizens cannot put up with that choice and tolerate adoption of those values. He even failed to inform his political party members about his option.
"It is not moral to make such a decision for Armenia to face such a predicament. It is very difficult to assess and understand which is the right way. Even it is not the content that mattered but the manner it was adopted. The process Armenia was involved in for years, by receiving funds from Europe and giving promises, imitating adoption of European values vanished by one statement," said Ayvazyan noting that the citizens and NGOs face a serious challenge. They will attempt to overcome that situation and save Armenias reputation. It was an uneasy task to indicate how feasible the solution would be.
