On May 7, 2009 Varuzhan Hoktanyan, Project Director of Transparency International Anti-corruption Center acted as a judge for quarter-final competition on "Elected political figures in Armenia are accountable to the voters" topic in National Debate Championship (NDC), which brought together high school participants in "Youth Engaged in Society" (YES) debate club project. During May 6-7 championship 14 teams of overall more than 100 participants debated on 4 topics related to civil society.

Other topics that the NDC covered during the two days of the championship were "The parents' material assistance is needed at schools", "The exploitation of Teghut mine is beneficial for Armenia", "Armenian and Turk societies are ready for resumption of bilateral relations".

YES School Debate Club project has been implemented since 2004 by "Youth for Achievements" educational NGO, and the Armenian-American Jinishian Memorial Foundation with financial and technical assistance of Counterpart International and co-funded by European Union. By implementing its two goals - to teach and learn from each other - this NDC has become the biggest of all championships organized so far within YES project.
