Human Rights in the Draft Constitutional Amendments of Armenia
On October 23, 2015, Heriknaz Tigranyan, Legal Adviser of Transparency International Anticorruption Center took part in a Workshop on Human Rights in the Draft Constitutional Amendments of Armenia. She presented TIAC’s position on the articles related to human rights in the Draft Constitutional Amendments of Armenia.
Other speakers of the workshop were Ambassador Andrey Sorokin, Head of the OSCE Office in Yerevan; U.S. Ambassador to Armenia Richard M. Mills, Jr.; Ambassador Dr. Piotr Antoni Świtalski, Head of Delegation of the European Union to Armenia; Josef Siegele, Secretary General, European Ombudsman Institute (EOI); Karen Andreasyan, Human Rights Defender of Armenia; Gevorg Danielyan, member of the Specialized Commission for Constitutional Reforms under the President’s Administration; human rights advocates Ara Ghazaryan, Artak Zeynalyan, Avetik Ishkhanyan and Artur Sakunts.
U.S. Ambassador to Armenia Richard M. Mills attached importance to open, inclusive debates on amendments and to enable the opponents of constitutional changes have equal opportunities to express their voices, especially via broadcasting media.
In the opinion of Dr. Piotr Antoni Świtalski, Head of Delegation of the European Union to Armenia, should the Constitution have concealed short-term agenda it would not be possible to reach any result. It is not the words that are important but the implementation.
