Since its founding in 1983, the biennial International Anti-corruption Conference (IACC) series has evolved into the premier international forum for all who are committed to the fight against corruption. The 13th IACC focused on the role of transparency and accountability in human security, climate change, sustainable globalization, as well as natural resources exploitation and management under the banner "Global Transparency: Fighting corruption for a sustainable future."

The 13th IACC was held from October 30 to November 2, 2008 in Athens, Greece. Transparency International Anti-corruption Center's Chairwoman Amalia Kostanyan made a presentation in "Making Our Voices Heard: Civic Action to Fight Corruption" interactive workshop and Vice Chair Varuzhan Hoktanyan in "Global Standards in Political Finance: Transparency and Accountability" workshop.

The interactive workshop introduced key concepts of civic empowerment and action, dwelt on anti-corruption advocates' mobilization of their fellow citizens to curb corruption - using nonviolent strategies and tactics, such as non-cooperation, civil disobedience, protests, digital technology communications, and coordinated, low risk mass actions. The workshop on political finance reflected on a few basic rules on political financing and existing standards and identified a set of best practices for global standards.

The conference brought together more than 1300 participants from 135 countries who recognized the central role of transparency and accountability in mitigating the current financial crisis and preventing future failures. Seeking to put an end to the misery, alienation and instability that corruption breeds, the global anti-corruption meeting called for making corruption a key factor that must be addressed in order to strengthen financial, environmental and natural resources governance.
